Windrose Thomas Richards Boss Fight Guide (Coastal Village)

Windrose Thomas Richards Boss

Thomas Richards is the first major skill-check in Windrose, standing at the end of the "Revenge Is Best Served Cold" quest in the Coastal Village. If he is constantly one-shotting you, it is not your dodging—it is your gear. Windrose uses strict scaling; engaging Thomas with Level 2 or 3 armor guarantees your death. You must utilize the Shipwright to push all weapons and armor to Level 5. Furthermore, do not listen to generic guides telling you to "just kite him with a gun." At this stage of the game, you cannot craft Gunpowder. If you run out of looted ammo mid-fight, you will panic and die. Prepare for a melee duel, stack the Conquistador/Pikeman armor combo for massive HP, and memorize the dodge timing for his unblockable "Red Glint" grab attack.

The Hardcore Prep: Gear Checks & Armor Metas

Thomas Richards hits like a freight train on Standard difficulty. This fight is mathematically designed to punish players who ignore base building and crafting.

1. The Level 5 Hard Cap

The game prevents you from upgrading gear past Level 5 until you defeat Thomas and reach the Foothills. If your weapon or chest piece is currently Level 4 or below, then you must return to the Shipwright's Workshop immediately and spend the ingots to max them out. Every single point of ATK/DEF matters here.

2. The Early Game "God Tank" Combo

Do not wear a random assortment of green (Uncommon) gear. You need the survivability provided by Rare Set Bonuses. The absolute best setup for this specific boss is the Tank Duo Armor Build:

  1. Pikeman Set (2-Piece): Grants a flat +160 Maximum Health.
  2. Conquistador's Set (2-Piece): Grants +15% Damage Resistance.

This combination effectively gives you a 30% larger health pool, allowing you to survive his unblockable grab attack if you misread the dodge.

3. The Consumable Baseline

Do not eat raw bananas. Cook actual meals at the Cooking Fire to secure at least two strong Food Buffs (Strength or Agility depending on your weapon). Ensure you sit by your Bonfire to gain the Rested Buff for insane Stamina regeneration before engaging.

The "Kiting Trap" (Ranged Weapon Warning)

Many players realize that the Blunderbuss deals massive chunk damage to Thomas. This leads them to try and kite him around the arena.

The Reality Check: As we outlined in our Gunpowder Guide, you cannot craft your own gunpowder until you unlock the Millstones in the next biome. You are strictly limited to whatever gunpowder you have looted from POI chests.

If you miss a few shots and run out of ammo halfway through his health bar, then you will be forced into a melee duel with a weapon you aren't prepared to use. Treat your Blunderbuss as a combo-finisher, not your primary damage source.

Thomas Richards Move Set & Counters

Once you are geared, the fight becomes a simple rhythm game. Thomas has highly telegraphed moves, but punishing them requires strict Stamina management.

Thomas' Ability The Lethal Threat The Correct Counter-Action
Double & Triple Swings Standard melee combos. Drains stamina if blocked normally. Perfect Block. Tap block just before impact to shatter his 'Shield' icons (Posture). If your timing is bad, Dodge backwards.
Frontal Smash (Red Glint) Unblockable heavy smash. Will crush your posture instantly. Dodge Roll (Ctrl). You cannot block red attacks. Roll perpendicularly (to the side).
Charge & Grab (Red Glint) The run-killer. He charges across the arena and grabs you for massive damage. Dodge Roll (Late Timing). Do not panic roll early. Wait until he is within 5 feet of you, then roll diagonally forward-left or forward-right.
Bomb Toss Throws explosives with large AoE markers on the ground. Sprint away. Use this time to drink a Healing Potion or reload your gun.

The Execution: Your entire goal is to break his Posture (the small shield icons beneath his health bar). Stand your ground, Perfect Block his normal swings, and Dodge his Red Glint attacks.

If his Posture breaks, then he becomes staggered. This is your cue to unleash heavy attacks or a point-blank Blunderbuss blast to his face. Take your time, chip him down, and the path to the Foothills will unlock.

FAQ: Boss Fight Troubleshooting

Q: I'm dodging correctly, but I always run out of Stamina and get hit anyway. Why?

A: You are attacking too many times during your openings. Windrose combat is punishing. If you deplete your Stamina to 0 by spamming attacks, you will not have enough to dodge his follow-up Red Glint grab. Always leave a sliver of Stamina in reserve for defensive maneuvers.

Q: I don't have enough Iron Ingots to upgrade all my gear to Level 5. Where do I farm?

A: In the Coastal Village zone, check your map for "Ancient Debris" or "Mining Camp" POIs. Iron ore nodes respawn, so you can cycle between them. Use your Smelter to process the ore. Do not engage Thomas without Level 5 gear.

Q: Does he drop a unique legendary weapon when killed?

A: Not directly on his body. However, defeating him clears the zone and gives you access to the Foothills, which unlocks the next massive tier of crafting recipes, fast travel points, and access to new Faction Provisioners.
