Windrose Gunpowder Guide: Millstone Crafting & Loot Routes

Windrose Gunpowder

If you are trying to play a pure Ranged build in Windrose, you have probably realized that Gunpowder is the absolute bottleneck of your DPS. Here is the frustrating reality of Early Access: you cannot craft your own Gunpowder until the mid-game. The game hides the crafting station (Millstones) behind an incredibly counter-intuitive trigger—you have to harvest Corn. Before you reach the Foothills to find that Corn, your only option is to play aggressively and loot gunpowder directly off dead pirates. Once you finally establish your base production line, do not waste raw materials without assigning the worker "Mortar Joe" to your Millstones for a massive +50% yield bonus.

Early Game Meta: Aggressive Looting

Do not pull out your hair trying to find a gunpowder schematic in the Coastal Jungle. It does not exist there. During the early game, you must treat Gunpowder purely as a looted consumable, exactly like healing potions.

If you run out of ammo, then you must switch to a Saber or Rapier and assault pirate encampments.

  1. Enemy Pirates: Basic Sailors and Musketeer enemies in the Foothills have a very high drop rate for Gunpowder. Clearing a single large pirate camp will typically net you almost a full stack.
  2. POI Chests: Ancient Chests inside ruins and sunken ships are guaranteed to drop small clusters of ammo.

The Counter-Intuitive Unlock: Harvest Corn

This is where Windrose gets weird. To craft Gunpowder, you need a specific workstation called the Millstones. You cannot build it using standard stone or wood.

The Hidden Trigger: You MUST travel to the Foothills biome and harvest a wild Corn plant.

The moment the Corn enters your inventory, the game magically unlocks the recipe for Millstone Parts at your standard Workbench.

The Construction Sequence:

  1. Harvest Corn in the Foothills.
  2. Go to Level 1 Workbench: Craft 1x Millstone Parts (Costs 15x Stone).
  3. Open Build Menu (B): Place the Millstones (Costs 1x Millstone Parts + 15x Wood).

Crafting & The Resource Loop

Once your Millstones are operational, you face a new problem: fueling it. The recipe for Gunpowder is resource-heavy:

1x Gunpowder = 10x Ash + 20x Sulfur

Resource Primary Source Efficiency Tip
Sulfur Nodes spawning on rocky outcroppings in the Foothills. Do not hand-mine forever. Once you defeat the boss "Israel Hands," you can buy bulk Sulfur from the Natural Resources Merchant.
Ash A passive byproduct of burning Wood into Charcoal inside a Charcoal Kiln. If you are desperately low, you can force-craft Ash at the Millstones (2x Charcoal = 6x Ash). Avoid this unless it's an emergency, as Charcoal is vital for smelting.

Late Game Meta: Automate with Mortar Joe

If you are playing the Reliable Musketeer build, hand-crafting Gunpowder will burn all your free time. Windrose features a Worker system that you must exploit.

You can rescue and enlist specific NPCs to work at your base stations. If you assign the worker named Mortar Joe to your Millstones, then you instantly receive a massive +50% output bonus to your Gunpowder production without spending any extra Sulfur or Ash.

This automation is not optional for ranged players; it is the only way to sustain the bullet economy for late-game Cursed Swamp crypts.

FAQ: Gunpowder Mechanics

Q: I have Gunpowder in my inventory, but my Pistol still won't fire. What's wrong?

A: Ranged weapons require TWO separate resources to function: Gunpowder AND Bullets (Iron, Copper, or Stone). Check your Character UI. Both the Bullet and the Gunpowder must be equipped into the active Ammo slots next to your weapon.

Q: Is there any way to craft Homemade Gunpowder like I found in the Swamp Chests?

A: Yes, but that is a completely different tier of explosive. "Homemade Gunpowder" is found in Ancient Chests (often while farming Quagmire Powder) and is used for advanced alchemy and explosives, not standard firearm ammunition. Stick to the basic Millstones recipe for your guns.

Q: Does the "Auto-Refill" option waste my gunpowder?

A: No. In your inventory ammo slot, clicking the small gear icon enables Auto-Refill. This simply pulls from your backpack automatically when your equipped stack runs out during combat. It saves you from dying because you forgot to manually drag a new stack over while being chased by a Pirate.
