Windrose Boss Guide: Defeating the High Priestess

windrose forgotten relics quest

When you reach the end of the "Forgotten Relics" questline in the Cursed Swamps, you face the High Priestess—a gargantuan, mutated toad. A massive mistake players make when fighting giant bosses is trying to stay behind them to attack their legs. If you do this to the High Priestess, she will spam her lethal 'Tail Swipe' and 'Rollover' attacks, flattening you instantly. The hardcore counter-intuitive reality is that standing directly in front of her face is the safest place to be. By utilizing a 1-Handed weapon that can Perfect Block, you lock her into a predictable 4-hit melee combo. Shattering her Posture forces out her "true form," allowing you to burst her down easily.

Gear Preparation: Abandon 2H Weapons

Because the High Priestess is a massive HP sponge, going in under-geared will result in a 20-minute slog where you eventually run out of stamina and die.

The Build Check: If you are wielding a Plague Halberd or a Greatsword, then you are playing on hard mode. Weapons that cannot Perfect Block will take massive chip damage during her melee flurries. You MUST run a fast, 1-Handed build.

We strongly recommend the Rapier Of Devastation Precision Build or the Saber Dragon Crit Build. Both allow for rapid Perfect Blocks and bring immense single-target DPS.

  1. Weapon Tier: Must be upgraded to Level 15 at the Shipwright.
  2. Food Meta: Eat a Seafood Platter (+20 Vitality) and pop an Elixir corresponding to your damage stat.

High Priestess Move Set & Hardcore Counters

The High Priestess looks intimidating, but her moveset is highly scriptable if you manipulate her positioning.

Boss Ability The Lethal Threat The Correct Counter-Action
Melee Swipes & Tongue Her bread and butter. If you miss blocks, your stamina drains instantly. Perfect Block. Lock into her rhythm. Only dodge if your stamina is broken.
Tail Swipe & Rollover Massive AoE damage that covers her flank and rear. Hard to read. DO NOT STAND BEHIND HER. Force her to use frontal melee by standing in her face.
Acid Globules Ranged AoE bombardment that leaves toxic pools on the ground. Do not block. Sprint laterally (sideways) until the barrage stops.
The Charge Glows red (Unblockable). Will one-shot fragile builds. Dodge roll perpendicularly at the very last second of the wind-up.

The Fight Strategy: "If-Then" Execution

The game tries to teach you a specific mechanic: shoot the large glowing pustules on her back. When they pop, they deal Posture damage. However, running around trying to shoot her back exposes you to her devastating Rollover attack. Ignore the pustules. Use the Face-Tank Strategy.

Phase 1: The Posture Grind

If you stand directly in front of her face in melee range, then her AI will loop a very predictable 4-hit combo: Right Swipe > Left Swipe > Right Slam > Tongue Swipe.

Simply stand your ground, hit your Perfect Blocks to drain her Posture meter, and weave in pistol shots (like Drake's Double-Barreled) during the brief pauses.

Phase 2: The Intermission (Vulnerability)

Once her Posture breaks, the giant toad collapses. This triggers the intermission. The "true form" of the High Priestess will emerge from the toad's mouth.

If the true form appears, then unleash everything. Apply the Vulnerability debuff with your pistol, pop your 8-stack Plague Marks with a Heavy Attack, and nuke her. She will take massive critical damage during this short window.

Rinse and repeat this cycle 2 to 3 times, and the Cursed Swamp is conquered.

FAQ: Boss Fight Troubleshooting

Q: I keep running out of Stamina while trying to Perfect Block her 4-hit combo. What am I doing wrong?

A: You are likely "Panic Blocking" (holding the block button too early). A standard block consumes massive Stamina and halts your regeneration. A Perfect Block (tapping right before impact) consumes almost no Stamina. Ensure you have the 'Marathon Runner' talent maxed and drink Coffee for the Endurance buff.

Q: What loot do I get for beating her? Does she drop an S-Tier weapon?

A: No. She drops the quest item Charon's Obol (required to progress the main story) and 10x Tears of Sorrow. S-Tier Plague weapons are looted from the Crypts scattered around her biome, not the boss herself.

Q: Can I use the Boar Whistle to tank the High Priestess?

A: Absolutely! Truffle is fantastic here. If you miss a Perfect Block and need to heal, blow the Boar Whistle. Truffle will draw the toad's aggro, causing her to turn around. This is the only time you should safely shoot the pustules on her back while she is distracted by the boar.
